2011 IDSF Grand Slam Series: Tokyo Leg 08/03/2011

The 13th Tokyo International Open on 13 March comprises two of the premier events in the IDSF calendar: the Japan legs of the 2011 Grand Slam Series Latin and Standard.

As in the past, a veritable who’s who of top-ranked dancers in both disciplines should enter the competition at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium.

For some Latin couples it will be the final chance to match up against peers prior to the European Championship in Marseille on 26 March.  In Japan and two weeks later in France, the fight will be for the succession of perennial IDSF Latin Champions Alexey Silde and Anna Firstova, Russia.

Standard should see a line-up of top contenders much as in 2010, when Benedetto Ferruggia and Claudia Köhler took first in the Tokyo leg of the series and went on to win all the way to the Grand Slam Final in Shanghai, China.

Keiji Ukai, Executive Director of the Japan DanceSport Federation and IDSF Presidium Member, reports that altogether some 150 couples are expected.

The Grand Slam will again be televised across Japan. IDSF Communications expects to have access to these programmes and to be able to put them up on the DanceSport Total channel.

Reports and photography on the IDSF Grand Slam in Tokyo will be published here next week.
