Athletes' Files 23/02/2011

It all started with the IDSF Registration and Licensing System (RLS), a comprehensive database that allowed for the names and other relevant data of athletes to be collected and used in the administration of IDSF competitions.

The RLS [here] has been up and running for over a year now. Through the system, IDSF is compiling its monthly World Ranking List and, gradually, providing its event organisers with the opportunity to tie in some of their administrative processes too. Who knows, in the not too distant future an athlete might be able to enter a competition by simply submitting a proprietary barcode, or similar, to the event organisers. That his or her name is spelled correctly from accreditation and hotel reservation right through to the posting of the final results should then be guaranteed. But that is the RLS!

As far as this website is concerned, IDSF intends to create another platform, one that is firmly based on the RLS but goes one step further yet. DanceSport, as all others, must be able to provide the media as well as the fan community with information on its athletes beyond their name and date of birth.

The aim is to bring IDSF athletes more into the spotlight by highlighting their personalities through the compilation of in-depth biographies that present not only their sporting history but also their distinctive experiences and personal characteristics, thus helping to make them stand out in the eyes of the media and the fans as the singular personalities they are.

To compile such information is difficult but not impossible, provided the athletes themselves will collaborate with IDSF Communications.

"From the RLS we have their names and numbers already, from the athletes we expect biographical background to the extent that should be achievable and that our privacy policy allows for."

The plan is

  • To update the athletes' biographies prior to IDSF World DanceSport Championships, Grand Slam Finals and multi-sport games,
  • To always have the top 20 couples in the IDSF World Ranking List of all age grades up-to-date, and
  • To facilitate access to their personal records to all athletes so they can update their biographies themselves.

We will advise athletes how we plan to go about that. For the time being, we will try to line up biographies and write the first profiles on all current IDSF World Champions.
