Carnivalistic DanceSport 02/02/2017

Karnivalistische Tanzgarde Everybody knows that dance is one of the principal ingredients of the Carnival in Brazil. Above all in the Sambadrome of Rio de Janeiro, members of the samba schools parade by the hundreds of thousands, probably even millions, singing and dancing for three days straight.

It's almost the same in Germany. Even if the numbers don't quite compare to those in Brazil, a good percentage of the people involved in celebrating the "Karneval," "Fasching" or "Fastnacht" are dancers - and well trained ones at that.

According to an article in the German news magazine FOCUS, the number of young people getting involved in what is appropriately called "Carnivalistic DanceSport," is on a steady increase. This is good news for our National Member Body "Tanzsport Deutschland" (DTV) too. Among the DTV associate members is the "Bundesverband für karnevalistischen Tanzsport in Deutschland," an association uniting all the different entities promoting the forms of DanceSport that tie in with Carnival: "dancing guards" (above) and individual dancers called "Tanzmariechen." There are even German Championships plus another DTV associate member uniting the dancers who practise similar disciplines as year-round elite sport.
