The 2014 METU Open 04/11/2014

METU Open "DanceSport in Turkey gives a strong sign of life and activity," writes Heidi Goetz about the recent METU Open in Ankara. Here is her full report.

The competition is run meanwhile since 13 years. In 2009 it became a WDSF Ranking competition. The startlist and the steadily increasing number of participants prove, that METU Open is a very popular event.

In the World Open Latin we saw an entry of 81 couples out of 24 nations. Of course there was quite a number of couples which are rather new in DanceSport and try to experience their skills and talents, but in the 24 there was high level dancing shown.
Clear and easy winners were Charles Guillaume Schmit and Elena Salikhova, France.

Thank goes to the organizers Goktug Karacalioglu and Özgün Çağlar Ersoy and their team. With a large crowd of volunteers taking care of officials and athletes everyone got the feeling of being welcome and enjoyed the great hospitality.

The interest in DanceSport was also well documented in the number of sponsors which is of extraordinay importance for every organizer. The event took place in Ankara in one of the biggest University areas - Middle East Technical University - METU. Most of the volunteers are students there. It's their first contact with DanceSport and for some of the the initiative to start a dancing career.
